The Amalfi Coast,
or Costiera Amalfitana in Italian, is a stretch of coastline
on thesouthern
side of the Sorrentine Peninsula of Italy in the Province
of Salerno, extending from Positano in the west to Vietri
sul Mare in the east. Amalfi is
of course,as
the name suggests,
the main town of the coast
and today an important tourist destination together with
other towns such as Ravello and Positano.
The Amalfi Coast is made of thirteen towns
along the road that goes from the Gulf of Salerno to that

The AMALFI COAST, “LA DIVINA COSTIERA ”
The landscape is made of sea and mountains, with
creeks and coves often reachable only by sea, such as for example
the wonderful cave, 'grotta dello Smeraldo' situated in Conca dei
Marini and the suggestive Furore fjord. In some areas nature is
completely uncontaminated and the lanscapes are unspoiled. The
hillside area is occupied by the Lattari Mountains, which are of
calcareous nature and rich in woods: the highest mountain is Monte
S. Angelo a Torre Pizzi (1425 m).
The Coast is characterised by the typical cultivations
on the terraced land where the most important product is lemon
and other citruses. Lemons are mostly sweet and can also be eaten
in slices, as a dessert, with or without sugar. Lemons are usually
used for cakes or candied and then covered with chocolate. Very
famous worldwide is
"limoncello", a traditional yellow liqueur made of lemon peels,
to be served ice cool after a meal. A legend tells that the inhabitants
of Minori convinced the Pope to give them back the bishopric giving
him as a present a basket with lemons and other citruses.
The town of Amalfi was the capital
of the Maritime Republic of Amalfi, an important trading power
in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200. Cetara is
characterized to be a village of fishermen, specialized in ' tuna
and anchovies fishing'; Maiori has
been a popular tourist resort since Roman times, with the longest
beach on the Amalfi coastline. The origins of the town are unclear
but the original name of the town was Reghinna Maior, in contrast
to the neighbouring town, Minori,
Reghinna Minor, which is the site of well-preserved ruins of a
Roman villa; Ravello is
famous for its music Festival and for Villa Cimbrone and Villa
Rufolo, the place where Richard Wagner found inspiration for his
opera Parsifal; Vietri
sul Mare is popular for its local ceramics; Positano is
known for its fashion, called Moda Positano; Atrani, Furore, Conca
dei Marini, Tramonti, Praiano are
